Outspoken US billionaire businessman Donald Trump is one of the
millions of people around the world who feel Oscar Pistorius got a
light sentence today in the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva.
And trust Donald to speak his mind. He called judge Masipa a
moron for giving Oscar just five years.

Oscar Pistorius given five years in prison

South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been given five years in
jail for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Judge Thokozile Masipa also gave Pistorius a three-year
suspended sentence for a firearms charge.

The parents of Reeva Steenkamp told the BBC they were happy with
the sentence and relieved the case was over. The defence said it
expected Pistorius to serve about 10 months in prison.

Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide but cleared of
murder.
Prosecutors had called for a minimum 10-year term, and the
defence had argued for community service and house arrest.

Oscar Pistorius’ trial: The athlete ‘has no money’

The sentencing hearing of Oscar Pistorius has heard that the South
African athlete has no money left, as both sides’ final arguments
were made.

Defence lawyer Barry Roux said Pistorius was both “broke and
broken” after the seven-month trial.

Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide last month after
shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year, but was
cleared of murder.

Judge Thokozile Masipa is expected to deliver the sentence on
Tuesday.

There is no legal limit on the length of a jail term, but the
prosecution has argued for a minimum of 10 years.
Experts say the typical maximum sentence for the crime is around
15 years.

Pistorius’ defence team has argued for him to be given community
service and house arrest, a suggestion the prosecution said would
be “shockingly disproportionate”.

Oscar Pistorius’ trial: Steenkamps ‘rejected blood money’

Athlete Oscar Pistorius offered a large cash sum to the parents of
girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp after he killed her – but it was rejected
as “blood money”, a South African court has heard.

Pistorius’s offer of $34,000 (£21,000) was revealed by prosecutor
Gerrie Nel during his sentencing hearing.

Earlier, a defence witness told the court that Pistorius would be
physically at risk if sent to prison.

He has been found guilty of culpable homicide, but cleared of
murder.

The defence is trying to show that prison would be an inappropriate
punishment.
Pistorius’ offer of a lump sum of 375,000 rand to the Steenkamp
family emerged on the second day of his sentencing hearing, during
the cross-examination of defence witness Annette Vergeer.

Oscar Pistorius

South African athlete Oscar Pistorius returns to court for
sentencing after being convicted of killing his girlfriend, Reeva
Steenkamp.

Pistorius was found guilty of the culpable homicide of Ms
Steenkamp last month but he was cleared of murder.
Judge Thokozile Masipa is expected to hear legal arguments and
testimony for several days before passing sentence.

Pistorius faces up to 15 years in jail, although Judge Masipa could
suspend the sentence or only impose a fine.
She said the athlete had acted “negligently” when he shot his
girlfriend through a toilet door , but in the “belief that there was an
intruder”.

The Paralympic sprinter had strenuously denied murdering Ms
Steenkamp after a row on Valentine’s Day last year, saying he shot
her by mistake.

Ms Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model and law graduate, was hit
three times by bullets shot through a toilet door by Mr Pistorius at
his home in the capital, Pretoria.

The judge said the state had failed to prove he intended to kill.
